Memphis Voyager-Hidden Gems: Meet Robyn Noble Powell of The Helper Bee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Noble Powell.

Hi Robyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?

Here’s My UN-BEE-LIEVABLE Story:

As a young adult, those close to me always noticed an entrepreneurial spirit in me. However, I did not see it in myself because I never wanted the buck to stop with me and never saw myself as talented, creative, or gifted—what I thought it took to be an entrepreneur. I knew that I admired those qualities in others and wanted to help those people become successful, but that was it.

I started working as an administrative assistant and in the middle of two decades of that work, I decided to make myself more marketable in the workforce by earning a degree in Business Administration. Bolstered by my family, friends, and nagging thoughts that there had to be better approaches to what I was seeing in business, I was determined to grow and excel academically, while continuing to work and run a family. It was one of the most challenging things I have ever done, but I overcame the challenges and graduated summa cum laude from LeMoyne-Owen College with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree. The strengths and skills I gained from that experience were invaluable.

After graduation I continued in administrative work, trying to apply that expanded knowledge base, but I did not feel settled. In 2017, I began a spiritual journey that led me to know God more intimately. During this journey, God started to reveal to me who He was and who He created me to be. Although God was revealing His plan for my life, I was hesitant to accept His vision. I received numerous prophesies confirming God’s plans for me, several which mentioned me owning my own business but, again, I did not receive what was being said. Instead, I continued to play it safe, stay in my comfort zone, and help others to grow their businesses.

Fast forward to 2021…during a conversation about side-hustles, my friend encouraged me to think of something I could do to generate some extra income. I rested on the same thoughts—I know a lot about business and have experience running others’ business but wasn’t creative and didn’t have a marketable talent or gift. She laughed and told me to pray about it.

Well, that is exactly what I did. I started praying and seeking God for inspiration. A few days later, as I walked to the mailbox, I began to ask God again, “Lord, what can I do for extra income? What talents have you given me?’ and He answered as clear as day, “Do what you’ve been doing all along – help people—that’s the gift and talent I gave you.” I immediately called my friend; relayed God’s message and we tossed some ideas around. I also reached out to a couple of my other friends who are business owners to hammer out the whys and hows. From that spark and friendly seeds, The Helper Bee, LLC, bloomed and has been buzzing ever since!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

For me, the biggest struggle has been embracing the entrepreneurial call. Once I stopped running scared and truly allowed God to direct my path, things started to align. As with any service start-up though, there have been a lot of highs and lows, and challenges to overcome—navigating marketing and social media, fluctuation of business, choosing to run my business full-time earlier than planned, dealing with naysayers, realizing that I am now running a business as my main source of income and not a hobby, and finding the right people to help with operations.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

We buzz about where and when you need something, so you don’t have to!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?

While I thought the key attributes for entrepreneurial success were creativity and some inherent talent or gift, those that have been most important to my success are integrity, professionalism, and timeliness in providing services; good communication, the ability to connect with others, and passion for what you do that comes across in conducting business and building repeat customer relationships; and dedication—the discipline, perseverance, and drive to keep at it every day, even during thin times because you are the best determinant of your success when you run your business. I never, in my wildest dreams, imagined that my ability to be helpful, reliable, and personable would end up being a successful business with this much buzz. To God be the glory!
